Locusts Can Smell Cancer!

Close-up photo of an insect. Either a locust or grasshopper.

Due to their voracious appetite for food crops, locusts are not usually thought of as helpful,

That could change. Work done at Michigan State University has shown that locusts are able to tell the difference between normal and cancer cells. Not only that, but they can tell the difference between different kinds of cancer!

No one is suggesting that locusts be used to detect cancer in humans, but it may be possible to reproduce their abilities and detect cancers more easily.  Pretty unusual place to find an ally for cancer patients.
